Spring Break '11

Today is the first day of Spring Break. The kids made a list of things they want to go and do this week.
Mitch and Megan's Spring Break to do list:

go to the Lego Store

go to Build a Bear

go to the Apex and swim
short, simple, but fun!

Mini Dad

Frank and Mitch worked on Frank's jeep a little this weekend.

It was pretty cute, and dirty!

Everyone's doing it!

In the last month 3 of my mom friends have started blogs. I've had mine up since 2008 but I thought I would give them a little shout out since I think they are pretty cool gals. Keeping up with a blog takes a lot of time and creativity.

My baby seal

Megan is still sick and last night it sounded like we had a seal in the house. I took her to the doctor this morning(thank goodness our doctor is open on Sat.!) and she has croup. I knew that at 4am this morning, but had to take the poor girl in to get steroids for her barking cough. Hopefully, tonight is better and we all get some sleep.

Praying for Joanne

Have you been praying for my bloggy friend Joanne Heim? She is an amazing woman and someone I am so glad to have meet a few years ago. To follow her recent battle and walk, check out her blog(her husband is doing most of the updating right now) at www.thesimplewife.typepad.com

Keep lifting her up!

A sickly week

We are using up our sick days this week. On Monday I was feeling a little under the weather, then on Tuesday Mitch came down with the major crud(flu) and just can't shake the fever and headache, and tonight Megan started feeling yucky and running a fever. I thought we were doing pretty well this cold and flu season with just a few minor things, but I guess it was holding out for one last hooray. Oh, my! I think I might need a long nap after this week is over after all of the nose blowing, coughing spells, and laundry I/we have done. It's a good thing Spring Break is next week so everyone can get some rest from all of our sicknesses.

New Menu

As the season is starting to change and become warmer I have been feeling kind of bored with the meals I am cooking around here. Frank found me with the recipe box the other day and got very excited. I usually meal plan and shop for a week, but I feel like I am recycling the same 5 meals. My family isn't complaining(Megan only complains if it is soup, then she says yuck to that!), but I am feeling the need for some change.

These are a few of the recipes that are floating around in my mind, on my list, and tonight we had Carolina Chicken sandwiches.

Mexican Lasagna
Cabbage rolls
Chicken Marsala
Ham and Swiss Mac n Cheese

I am also looking forward to organic Spring fruits and veggies. Really good asparagus and strawberries are just right around the corner.

Homebodies

There is nothing I love more than a lazy day at home, but with two kids, two dogs and a husband that loves projects, lazy rarely happens. Now that we are in the season of elementary school I am finding that "activities" and "being active" is forced down a family's throat. I tend to move in the opposite direction and Frank and I have always agreed that the kids could only participate in one "activity", but recently karate came onto the scene. Mitch's school is doing an after school fundraiser type thing and oh, my gosh are we busy now. It is only 3 weeks and I am secretly praying that he doesn't like it because 1) it's expensive and 2) I can't handle all the running around. Plus, whatever happen to letting kids be kids. Am I sounding old fashioned? When I was little all I wanted to do was play Barbies, Barbies and more Barbies. Sure my sister and I were involved in Girl Scouts, a little bit of dance and there were some years of unicycle lessons(that's really random!!) but I just wanted to play. As a mom I keep the kids on a pretty tight schedule, but it's not a schedule of activities, it's a schedule just so they know what's next and chores, homework and other such things get accomplished. This is a battle I can only fight so long, activities, but one I will choose to battle so that my kids can have afternoons free as long as possible and just be that, kids.

New Jeans

I'm blogging about new jeans, yes, but if you know how long I have needed or been shopping for jeans you would understand what a big deal this is. I also found these jeans a week or so ago in Dillard's but, of course, they didn't have my size so the nice sales woman suggested ordering them for me. So, today they were waiting for me on my front step. Yay! I have to admit I was rather worried that said jeans may not fit and I would have to go through the grieving processes and start all over again. But, hooray, they do and I literally ran around the house in them. I am pretty sure Megan and the dogs thought I was nuts-o but who cares. I now have two brand new pair of jeans to wear, the old ones that were looking so shabby can now be relegated to weekends, and Frank doesn't have to listen to me whine about never finding jeans that fit, at least for a while anyway.

My Children of God

This is Megan's new favorite song and we sang it in church today so I thought I would share it here

Books and Movies

The Oscars were a few days ago and I made a point to watch some of the red carpet coverage but this year we had only seen one of the movies up for Best Picture...Toy Story 3. I have lots of the other nominees in our Netflix qeue but, sadly, I Italicdidn't get them watched in time. It's been a long time since Frank and I have seen a really good movie. Any suggestions?

If there was some sort of award show for books I might watch it. I have so many books lined up to read right now it is just silly. Just next to my bed on my nightstand I have Misplacing God and Finding Him Again, Shoot the Moon and Made to Crave. On my downstairs bookshelf(where I keep the books I want to read most) I have The Imperfectionist, Cutting for Stone, Incendiary and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet waiting for me. The Imperfectionist is high on my list since it is our March book club read and one I have been wanting to read since late last year. If there was just a little more time to read in the day or a little less laundry to do I could get through my list of "want to read" in no time. I would still give my award for best book of the year to
The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I have yet to read anything written quiet as eloquently.

Our Tiger Scout

Mitch earned his "official" Tiger Scout badge last month and also moved up the rankes to join the flag ceremony. I love this picture of him giving his "Scout salute".

I'm here

I seem to have taken a small bloggy break, so sorry about that! My computer decided to have some technical difficulties for a while there and then life in general just got busy. I promise to be better about blogging this month. Hope February was great for you!
